The holidays can be a fun time when it comes to decorating if you plan ahead the year before. Storing your holiday decorations in a neat and organized manner can make the decorating process much easier. In an effort to help you enjoy decorating for Christmas, here are four tips for preparing your holiday decorations for storage.

Storing Decorations Properly

When it comes to storing your holiday decorations, they can take up a lot of room. Typically, you may only use them a month out of the year before placing them back up for the next year. In order to keep space free in your home, you may want to consider storing your holiday decorations in a storage unit. This allows you to keep your decorations free from getting damaged and you can keep them better organized by having them all in one location. You also don't have to worry about lugging them down the stairs to a basement or up the stairs to an attic.

Artificial Christmas Trees

Many homes these days are choosing artificial Christmas trees over real ones. Whether it is to save money, reduce allergens, or just a personal preference, having an artificial Christmas tree requires a bit of storing when the holiday season is over. Some homeowners choose to store their Christmas tree in the attic or basement, but a storage facility may be your best option for holiday decorations. Artificial Christmas trees can take up a lot of space especially if you choose to leave the tree put together. Most artificial Christmas trees can be broken down into several pieces so they don't take up a lot of space. Whether you plan to store the tree in an attic or a storage unit, you want to keep the tree protected from dust, rodents, and insects. A Christmas tree storage bag can help preserve the tree best. These storage bags slide over the tree as a whole or can go over the individual portions when the tree is broken down.

Ornaments

Many Christmas ornaments are delicate and can be broken if mishandled. In order to keep your ornaments safe, place them in a separate area that doesn't get a lot of travel. Egg cartons are a great way to store your ornaments so that they remain together and protected. Once you have placed them in the egg cartons, you then want to seal them in a plastic container so that they are protected in case anything falls on them. It is important to keep them on the floor so they do not fall and break.

Christmas Lights

Strands of lights can get in a tangled mess and make it a headache the next year when you bring them out. To better organize the lights, mark each strand with how many feet it is and where the lights were placed when used. Using a reel, you can neatly roll up the light strands so that they do not get tangled and cause a mess. If you do not have a reel to use, you can also wrap the light strands around a piece of cardboard. In order to keep the lights in place, make small cuts on the ends of the cardboard so the lights slide into place.

About Me
using storage to improve a relationship

My husband has a hobby of buying old dirt bikes and ATVs and ripping them down to nothing to repair them. This little hobby of his took over our garage, our basement and started into my kitchen. I gave him two options — find a place to put his stuff or find a new place to live. He got a little creative and rented a storage unit close to our house. It is amazing how much stuff he moved from our property to the storage unit and it has helped us get along much better. If your spouse is taking over your home, read through this blog to get an idea about using storage to get it out.
