Storing Your Snow Blower And Winter Goods In A Storage Unit Safely
The snow blower you use during the winter doesn't have to take up space in your garage during the spring, summer and fall. You can rent a storage unit to keep all of the things that are strictly used during the winter months to free-up the much needed space in your garage. Below, you will learn how to prepare your snow blower for storage so that it remains in good condition for next season.
Preparations
Step 1: Drain the Fuel
Use a siphon pump to pump all of the fuel out of the tank. If your snow blower doesn't require a mixed gas, you can pump it directly into your lawnmower to get it ready for the first mowing this spring.
Step 2: Clean the Machine
After the fuel has been emptied, you can tilt the snow blower back and rest it on the handle to give you free access to the parts underneath.
Check out the shave plate and skid shoes for any signs of damage or wear. If you notice any visible damage, replace them before you store the machine away for the off-season. Doing the work now will save you time when next winter hits.
Remove the frame cover from bottom of the machine and check for damage to the gear shaft. If it appears bent, cracked or damaged, talk with a repair technician about getting the parts to make the repairs. If it appears to be in good shape, use some oil to coat the hex shaft and replace the frame cover.
Return the machine to the upright position and remove the belt cover. If the belt appears to be in good shape, put the cover back on and move on. If the belt appears frayed or worn out, replace it.
Step 3: Change the Oil
You don't want to store your machine for several months with dirty oil or an empty oil tank. Take a few minutes to change the oil. This will decrease the sediment that settles in the tank and ensure that your machine has enough oil to protect it from corrosion.
Choose a Storage Unit
If possible, find a storage unit that offers climate-controlled units. The climate control will help protect the machine from damage that can occur during hot temperatures and humid conditions. If left in hot and humid climates the belt and hoses could become damaged and the machine could begin to rust.
Not only can using a storage unit help you free-up space during the spring, summer and fall, but it can help open up space in your garage during the winter as well. Move the fair-weather goods into the storage unit for the winter when you are getting the winter goods out.
