There are many reasons to store your belongings in a storage unit. You might be moving and need a place to store your items till you find a permanent residence, you could be needing more space in your house, or a myriad of other reasons. Regardless of the reason, there are a couple things you should be sure you are doing with your belongings to protect them. Here are a couple things you need to know.

1. Keep Furniture Off The Ground

You may be tempted to just lay furniture on the ground when storing it, but this should be avoided if at all possible. You can get blocks, boxes, or stilts to prop up all of the furniture, this will keep it safe.

The reason for this is that there needs to be air passing through the bottom of the furniture. If you put it directly on the floor it could get moldy, cracked, and be damaged. In addition, the floor is probably the most susceptible to temperature and humidity changes. The more changes in climate, the more damage you will get to your furniture. This is why you should always prop it up.

2. Keep The Furniture Covered

Second, you should always cover the furniture before you store it. You should never use plastic and wrap it tightly around the furniture. This will only trap the moisture and could cause damage, such as mold, to the furniture. Instead, a sheet or fabric loosely draped over the items is best. This will still protect the furniture from the elements such as dirt and dust, but it will still allow oxygen to pass through. If you don't have any oxygen the furniture will become ruined.

3. Polish The Furniture Before You Store It

Another important thing is to have fresh polish applied to every surface before you store it. This is especially applicable to wood and leather. The polish will hold the fibers together so that they don't expand and shrink with every season change. If you don't have polish each time the temperature changes you will have breakage of the materials.

If you choose to store your items for a very long time, you should be continually reapplying polish to the surfaces of the furniture. This will keep it protected from damage.

These are just a couple simple things that you should do when you store belongings. Otherwise you could easily damage your precious items. To learn more, contact a company like All American Mini Storage

About Me
using storage to improve a relationship

My husband has a hobby of buying old dirt bikes and ATVs and ripping them down to nothing to repair them. This little hobby of his took over our garage, our basement and started into my kitchen. I gave him two options — find a place to put his stuff or find a new place to live. He got a little creative and rented a storage unit close to our house. It is amazing how much stuff he moved from our property to the storage unit and it has helped us get along much better. If your spouse is taking over your home, read through this blog to get an idea about using storage to get it out.
