Decluttering A Home: Your Plan Of Attack

Clutter can be very stressful. Seeing things scattered all over the place can make it difficult to focus. Clutter creates hiding places for pests, and it can also slow down your workflow when you have to stop and search for what you need amid the clutter or maneuver around the clutter. Decluttering your home might seem overwhelming, but if you have a plan of attack, you can do it!

Select The Right Amount Of Time

Set aside a reasonable amount of time to declutter your home. If you decide to spend the entire day cleaning your entire home, you might discover that you do not have enough energy. However, if you do not set aside at least a few hours, you will likely not get a lot done and it will be too easy to get distracted by other tasks.

Get Three Boxes For Sorting

To streamline the decluttering process, get three boxes. Label one box as "keep," one as "store," and one as "throw away or donate." Then travel through your home and toss everything inside the appropriate box. You can place the items you intend to keep back where they belong. The "store" items can be placed in a storage unit.

Do Not Immediately Purchase Storage Containers

Be careful before purchasing storage devices, such as bins and boxes. First try organizing your belongings so you can get a better sense of your space. Then you can determine whether you actually have enough space for a storage device. Storage devices should allow for you to take advantage of vertical space that is otherwise not utilized. For instance, bottles stored in a container will take up less space than if they are arranged on a surface.

Start Throwing Things Away

If you have a large number of bottles throughout your bathroom, you can save space by instead using a dispenser, like those found in spas. These are easier to use and take up less space. There are several other items in your home that you may not have even realized could classify as garbage. As you eliminate garbage, you may find that your home is already significantly better. But if you still feel that there is a lot of clutter, remember the 80/20 rule. 20% of your belongings are used 80% of the time. So take those belongings you haven't used in months, toss them in the "storage" box and head straight to a storage facility like AA All American Airborne Self-Storage.

About Me
using storage to improve a relationship

My husband has a hobby of buying old dirt bikes and ATVs and ripping them down to nothing to repair them. This little hobby of his took over our garage, our basement and started into my kitchen. I gave him two options — find a place to put his stuff or find a new place to live. He got a little creative and rented a storage unit close to our house. It is amazing how much stuff he moved from our property to the storage unit and it has helped us get along much better. If your spouse is taking over your home, read through this blog to get an idea about using storage to get it out.
