If you care enough of about the items going into a self storage unit to keep them, then you should devise a system to keep track of what's in there. One key element of many organization plans is an inventory of what you have and where it is in the space. How can you make a useful storage inventory system for your particular needs? Here are three ideas anyone can implement.

1. Hang a List by the Door

Probably the most simple inventory is a handwritten list that you hang on a clipboard by the door of the unit. It can be as detailed or as basic as you need, and it's always handy for anyone entering the unit. A handwritten list can be updated at times, but you may want to use a computerized list if you will need to change the items or locations often.

2. Use Your Phone

If you prefer to use digital reminders, keep your inventory on a phone or tablet instead. This has a few advantages over pen and paper.

First, it can be updated as often as you want with much more ease than changing a physical copy. You can also add a lot more data or detailed explanations of things. You can even take photos of items or the inside of containers before sealing them up. Finally, if multiple people need to work with the unit's contents, you can share the digital information among all of them in real time.

3. Label Zones Inside

An inventory doesn't have to be kept on one list. You can integrate it into the unit itself. For instance, you might group items together by category or room and then tape an inventory list right in the zone itself. Or use shelves to organize smaller goods and tape the inventory list of the contents to each shelving unit. Individual containers might have additional, more detailed inventory lists attached directly to these.

If you skip the master inventory list, make sure you can clearly find and read the zone inventory lists. Even though you may have to search more individual lists, this method can capture great detail, and you can make changes to just one section without redoing the entire list.

Where to Start

About Me
using storage to improve a relationship

My husband has a hobby of buying old dirt bikes and ATVs and ripping them down to nothing to repair them. This little hobby of his took over our garage, our basement and started into my kitchen. I gave him two options — find a place to put his stuff or find a new place to live. He got a little creative and rented a storage unit close to our house. It is amazing how much stuff he moved from our property to the storage unit and it has helped us get along much better. If your spouse is taking over your home, read through this blog to get an idea about using storage to get it out.
